Meet the Maker: Izzie Roffe-Silvester Jewellery
This month we’re formally introducing you to the latest jeweller to join Team Flock: the lovely Izzie Roffe-Silvester.
Where are you from?
I’ve been in Brighton for nearly 5 years now, but growing up I moved around a lot. I’d consider myself European having lived in Geneva and the Netherlands as a child, and having worked and studied in France and Italy in my early twenties.
How long have you been running your label and how did you start out?
In 2014 I graduated with an MA in Sustainable Design from Brighton University which coincided with being given a grant to set up my jewellery business. I’ve been making and selling jewellery since then, but it’s only been the last few months that I’ve made steps to becoming a full time creative, which is very exciting!
What was the first piece of jewellery you made?
The first metalwork jewellery I made was actually a leaf necklace which is quite similar to some of the stuff I make now. I love how decorative, colourful and unassuming leaves are. I’ve always made jewellery from reclaimed materials and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Which type of piece do you most enjoy creating? Do you have a most popular design with customers?
My favourite piece, which also happens to be one of my most popular designs is my golden moth necklace. It’s a beautiful, simple shape and flutters as you move. I’ve been developing plenty of new designs in recycled silver which are nearly ready for the shop. It’s been a lot of fun making them so I hope customers will enjoy wearing them for years to come.
Where do you work?
I’m lucky enough to have a wooden cabin in my garden which makes the perfect studio. After years of trying to weave my creative tools into crammed living spaces, I’m now able to spread out and get messy (an essential requirement for jewellery making). In the summer I have the doors of my studio wide open so I can hear the birds and let the breeze in. The commute’s not bad either!
What attracted you to joining Flock?
As a customer, I’ve loved popping into Flock since it opened. It is one of the prettiest and most inspiring shops in the lanes. Flock is run as a collective and sells a range of vintage and handmade items which means that customers can rest assured they are buying something unique with a story. I was thrilled when a cabinet space became available in the shop and I started selling my jewellery here. I really like the vibe of the shop and already feel part of the team.
What’s inspiring you right now?
I’ve found myself being really inspired by water and everything about it. I love the pretty reflections, the way it glistens in the sun, the swirling sea, the dark mystery of ponds and the swimming creatures that it attracts. This mini obsession has bubbled to the surface after a recent trip to Cornwall with its wild coastline, seeing Hockney’s swimming pool paintings at a Tate exhibition and of course living by the sea keeps me inspired.
Where do you sell online?
At the moment I sell on Etsy www.izzieroffesilvester.etsy.com but I’m looking to open my own online shop shortly.
Have you explored Izzie’s collection at Flock yet? Which design is your fave?
