My Space: Hearts and Guns
There’s nothing better than owning a handmade piece of clothing. Knowing it is one of a kind and that an actual person has spent time, attention and imagination creating this item that you now get to enjoy again and again…
We champion all things handmade at Flock, so we’re excited to be kicking off our My Space blog series today. Over the next few months we’ll be inviting you into our labels’ workshops and studios to see where the magic happens! First up is:
Laura Powell of Hearts and Guns
My studio is in a room in my house. I moved into the attic last year so that I could use the biggest room to work in as over the years I have accumulated more and more equipment, fabrics and machines and I need the extra space.
I always work best if I can start first thing in the morning and work right through the day and often will work through well into the evening if I’m feeling inspired or am working to a particular deadline. I usually try to eat lunch in my studio too as it’s easy to get distracted if I leave the room for too long!
My most used tools would be my cutting mats, rotary cutter, chalk, scissors, dressmaking pins, industrial overlocker and industrial sewing machines.
At the moment I am working on re stocking the additional shops I sell in with new Spring/Summer clothes: these are Le Studio Ibiza, Poot in Frome, Artemis in Brighton and Wall and Jones in London. I’m making mostly kimonos and different lace top designs from vintage silk, embroidered fabrics and pretty lace.
I have a huge amount of fabrics and textiles I have collected. I made a pact with myself this year that I will only buy extra fabric if I really need to and therefore am working my way through the things I already have and having fun finding things that I’d forgotten I had!
